Keith
William's first experience in rehabilitation
began with a brick that fell on his finger.
Little did he know then that the ensuing process
of rehabilitation to restore the finger's function
would foreshadow his own life's work.
After
graduating from high school at the age of 15,
Keith went on to earn a degree in chemistry
before entering medical school.
By the age of 24, he was already in practice.
" I became
a physiatrist because I felt a connection to people who had lost mobility,
people who felt diminished in some way. I knew I had the ability to improve
their outlook and raise their expectations- not with hope, but by showing
them the difference a concerted medical team effort could make in their
lives."Many
of my patients have experienced quite a run-around, hopping from doctor
to doctor and never being let in on the big picture. Because only some
of their needs were being addressed, they never knew what was coming next.
Missing was communication and reassurance that they could again lead a
more active life.
I get satisfaction from helping disabled people regain functional independence,
remain at home, and avoid being institutionalized."
